Prepare Your Mobility Scooter For The Winter Ahead

« Blog

We understand that winter presents you with a whole host of new challenges, especially when it comes to using and maintaining your mobility scooter. Some parts of your mobility scooter are more susceptible to the cold and wet weather than others, so it’s important to make sure that you keep things in tip-top condition because, let’s be honest, there’s nothing worse than being stranded in the cold! Here are our tips for staying on the move this autumn/winter.

If you’re looking to get your mobility scooter serviced before the winter then call us today on 01905 29950.

Charging your mobility scooter battery

Keeping your battery in full working order is one of the best things you can do to prevent any mishaps. We recommend never running your batteries completely flat so take care to turn off any lights or auxiliary equipment when you finished using the scooter. Also, ensure that your scooter is turned off before charging. We strongly advise that you only use the charger that was supplied with your scooter or battery.

Charging times may vary upon how large your scooter or battery is, what kind of battery you have and how much charge the battery already has. With all of these taken into account, it could take anywhere between 8 – 14 hours for your scooter to be fully charged. Most scooters and/or batteries do have a light which will indicate when the battery is charging and when it is fully charged, so keep an eye out for this. Remember, the battery indicator on your scooter is much like a fuel gauge on a car. They’re not always accurate so make sure you charge by the time, not the lights.

Storing your mobility scooter

The simplest key to maintaining your scooter is to ensure you are storing it in the correct place. Choosing somewhere secure and dry is most ideal, but we understand that this isn’t always practical. If you need to store yours in a shed or a garage, be sure to check that it is fully weatherproof. We also recommend using a waterproof cover whilst it is in storage, just in case any accidents happen.

Protect your control panel

Your control panel is key to the functionality of your scooter. Without it, it simply won’t work. That is why you must be sure to keep this protected from any harsh weather in case of any irreparable electrical damage. Be sure to use the correct weatherproof covers for this, whether it’s for use or for storage to minimise any potential damage.

Check your tyres

Sounds simple enough, but not many of us actually do it. As it becomes wetter, icy and potentially snowy your tyres play a much larger role in your safety. Always check for any excessive wear, damage or punctures before your journey.

A great tip is to also consider your route before you leave your home. Plan out where you are going to visit and what kind of terrain there will be along the way. Doing this will give you the chance to avoid any unnecessary damage or wear to your tyres.

Get a mobility scooter service and health check

Before the harsh winter sets in, you should get your mobility scooter serviced. This can help to highlight any potential dangers in your mobility scooter before something happens and schedule any repairs in good time.
